Nasogastric Tube Placement
The process of inserting a flexible tube into the stomach through the nose is known as a nasogastric tube insertion. This tube is used to remove stomach contents or provide nutrition and medication to individuals who are unable to eat or swallow normally.
Typically, a nasogastric tube is inserted in the manner described below:
- The client is positioned reclining or sitting with their heads slightly cocked back.
- The nose and throat are numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort.
- To help the tube reach the stomach, the user may be urged to swallow or sip on water.
- Once the tube is in place, its position is confirmed by listening for air or aspirating stomach contents with a syringe.
- The tube is taped securely to the individual’s nose to prevent it from moving or becoming dislodged.
It is important to note that nasogastric tube insertion is a medical procedure that should only be performed by trained healthcare professionals.
