Nasogastric Tube Placement

The process of inserting a flexible tube into the stomach through the nose is known as a nasogastric tube insertion. This tube is used to remove stomach contents or provide nutrition and medication to individuals who are unable to eat or swallow normally.

Typically, a nasogastric tube is inserted in the manner described below:

  1. The client is positioned reclining or sitting with their heads slightly cocked back.
  2. The nose and throat are numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort.
  3. To help the tube reach the stomach, the user may be urged to swallow or sip on water.
  4. Once the tube is in place, its position is confirmed by listening for air or aspirating stomach contents with a syringe.
  5. The tube is taped securely to the individual’s nose to prevent it from moving or becoming dislodged.

It is important to note that nasogastric tube insertion is a medical procedure that should only be performed by trained healthcare professionals.
